Satellite connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of Europe’s digital infrastructure strategy.
On 27 May, the European Commission proposed a new EU-level procedure for selecting mobile satellite service providers authorised to use the harmonised 2 GHz frequency band after 2027, when current authorisations expire.
The spectrum is particularly relevant for direct-to-device services, which can connect conventional mobile devices to satellite networks and extend high-speed connectivity to areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable or disrupted.
The Commission proposes moving towards an EU-level selection process rather than fragmented national approaches, with the aim of providing operators with greater regulatory consistency and enabling services to be deployed across borders.
The initiative highlights how spectrum policy is evolving beyond traditional telecommunications regulation. Connectivity infrastructure is increasingly linked to competitiveness, technological resilience and security, making spectrum allocation a strategic component of Europe’s broader digital policy.
