What if a company could prove its identity, exchange certified documents, sign legally relevant information and interact with public administrations across Europe through a single digital environment?
The European Business Wallet initiative has moved closer to that objective after the Council adopted its negotiating position on 9 June.
Building on the European digital identity framework, the wallets are designed to facilitate secure interactions between businesses and between companies and public authorities across Member States.
Companies could use them to verify identities, store and exchange trusted licences and certificates, electronically sign and seal documents, delegate authority to representatives and communicate securely with administrations.
The initiative illustrates an important evolution of European digital policy: digital identity is moving beyond citizens and authentication towards becoming an infrastructure for cross-border economic activity.
Following the Council’s position, negotiations can proceed with the European Parliament once Parliament adopts its own position.
